Two of the biggest surprises of the first half of the 2021 NHL season will meet Sunday when Florida travels to Carolina. The two teams are battling for the lead in the Central Division with reigning Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay.

The Hurricanes (15-6-1) have two victories in three tries over the Panthers already this season. The interesting thing is both of those wins came on the road. Can Carolina pick up a home win and inch closer to the Division lead?

The Panthers lead the NHL in shots per game averaging 34.1. Florida is 11th in scoring averaging 3.19 goals per game. A quick look at NHL scores shows the Panthers lost their last two games to Carolina each by one goal - 3-2 and 4-3.

Florida will take on Nashville on Thursday and Saturday before facing the Hurricanes on Sunday. It will be the fifth back-to-back for the Panthers. They beat Detroit in both games in their first back-to-back and have split all the rest.

Goin' Streakin'

The Hurricanes have won their past three straight. Two of those wins were over Florida. The other was a 4-2 victory over Nashville on Tuesday night. Carolina will face Detroit on Thursday night before taking on Florida on Sunday.

That means Carolina will have a big rest advantage over the Panthers. The last time Carolina had two days off between games they beat Dallas 5-3 on the road.

In their past 20 games, Carolina is 14-6 SU. That includes a 6-2 mark at home. When looking at NHL betting stats , you find the Hurricanes are just 1-5 ATS in their last six games though; however, they are 6-3 ATS in their last nine home games.

Florida has covered in six of its last nine games and the Panthers are 17-8 ATS in their last 25 games on the road. Florida has also had great success on the road this year going 6-3-1 away from home. That includes a 5-1 mark in their last six road games.

Panthers at Hurricanes Free Pick

This game will be a battle. It's two of the best teams not only in the Central Division, but also in the league. Both teams can score and both are top-13 defenses in terms of goals against.

The big difference is going to be the rest advantage that Carolina will enjoy heading into Sunday's game. Florida will have played in Nashville on Saturday night. The NHL grind will get to them and the well-rested home Hurricanes will win.

With Florida's ability to keep games close, playing one of the teams on the puck line just doesn't seem advantageous. Expect a moneyline similar to the last time the two teams met (-105).

Take Carolina to win.
