"2 UNIT" LATE NIGHT BASEBALL UPSET SHOCKER (Padres +145 at Dodgers in a 10:10 eastern start-----------Correia versus Kershaw): This is a "pitching rematch" from this past Saturday when Clayton Kershaw much to my personal surprise outperformed Kevin Correia who was making his first start since the tragic hiking death of his brother exactly one-week earlier. In the initial four innings Correia held the Dodgers to only TWO hits but admitted afterward that he got fatigued after what was a very emotional week. I want all of you to be aware that San Diego has come up the WINNER 4 of the past 5 times that Correia has started against the Dodgers.
It is easy to see why Los Angeles has been cast as a prohibitive favorite this evening since Clayton Kershaw has pitched a pair of gems where he racked up 16 strikeout victims while just ONE opposing runner crossed the plate. But in the brief career of Kershaw who is just 22 years old, we have seen inconsistency. Prior to those impressive pair of outings Kershaw SEVEN runs in just 1.3 innings of work, so anything is possible. Last night the Dodgers long 9-game win streak came to a halt as the "first place" Padres won a high scoring 10-5 slugfest. The big news last night was San Diego slugger Adrian Gonzalez who actually was in the midst of a lengthy slump at the plate. Not only did Gonzalez snap that slump last night, he ended up driving in a "career high" SIX runs. The bottom line is that when Gonzalez is "on" so is the rest of the Padres lineup which last night got an outstanding performance from outfielder Will Veneable (4 runs scored, 1 stolen base) who was a homer shy of hitting for the CYCLE.
Last night San Diego pounded out 14 hits which is an unusual output for a team that is built on the strength of their pitching. San Diego is now an excellent 11-4 for the entire season to date when facing an opponent with a "winning" record. But the big news from my database research is that in the past three years the Dodgers are a disastrous 5-14 when off a horrible performance where the pitchers allowed an opponent to tally "double digit" runs
